Last month Motion City Films director duo Helen + Kim along with producer Reinette Du Toit travelled to De Aar, Northen Cape, to shoot the music video for Francois Van Coke’s Beter Mens. The video was one of ten concepts awarded funding by Kyknet’s MVP.
The team spent a week in De Aar shooting the music video with local cast.
‘It was an incredible experience in going back to the basics of filmmaking as we were a team of three people with very little gear (we only had what we were able to travel with), so we really had to consider our approach to every shot carefully. We also forget how much freedom comes with filmmaking when your resources are limited. It strips you of the fuss and frills and you work with what you have. We knew that we wanted to make a film that looked at issues of white masculinity in middle South Africa, but we wanted to go to De Aar with a loose narrative so that we could build the video based on the locations we found and the stories we heard. The cast was outstanding and the people of De Aar were incredibly helpful. We are super happy with how the video turned out and would like to thank everyone who worked with us on this, particularly Francois Van Coke and his team for trusting us with the video and giving us creative freedom.’ – director Kim Hinrichs.
